Privacy Policy
In short
- MotoPlay has no account and no sign-in. No ads, no analytics, no tracking. We run no server; we do not receive, see or sell any of your data.
- Your rides, parking spot, service records and settings stay only on your phone.
- Some features send your location to the services named below so they can work (weather, fuel stations, speed limits, routing). Those requests go straight from your phone and are not tied to any account.
Data that stays on your phone
MotoPlay stores the following only on your device (the app's storage, its shared app group, and the Keychain):
- Ride logs: track points (location, speed, altitude), duration, distance, top speed, rpm, coolant temperature, battery voltage, lean angle and g-force.
- Parking spot: location, an optional note, an optional photo and a reminder time.
- Saved places, a saved route, the last shared destination.
- Service and fuel records, odometer.
- Bike key (CCU ID and passkey): in the Keychain.
- Emergency contacts (name and phone number): only the contacts you pick in the contact picker.
- Your dash screen designs and any photo you choose as a background (a reduced copy).
- Link log and CAN log (for troubleshooting): kept on the phone; they leave it only if you tap Share and pick a destination.
If iCloud Backup or computer backups are on, iOS may include these files in your backup with Apple. Deleting the app deletes its data on the phone (iOS may keep the Keychain item).
Data sent to your motorcycle and Apple Watch
- Motorcycle (Bluetooth and the dash's accessory link): the dash screen picture, turn-by-turn guidance, weather, the playing song's title and artist, an incoming-call alert (a generic title, not the caller's name) and MotoPlay's own notifications. This goes to the unit in your motorcycle; MotoPlay does not send it anywhere else.
- Apple Watch: bike status, route and parking spot, straight to your watch over Apple's WatchConnectivity.
- Screen mirroring (optional): the screen picture goes only to the dash; it is not recorded or uploaded.
Outside services that receive your location
These requests go directly from your phone to the service. They carry no account, device ID or advertising ID; as with any internet request, each service sees your IP address.
| Service | Used for | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| Apple (MapKit, Core Location) | Place search, route calculation, map images, address/city name | Search text, start and destination, location. Covered by Apple's privacy policy. |
Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) | Weather on the dash and in the app | Approximate location (latitude/longitude rounded to about 100 m). |
OpenStreetMap Overpass API (overpass-api.de) | Nearby fuel stations, the current road's speed limit, speed cameras | Location (latitude/longitude) and a search radius. |
Google short links (goo.gl, maps.app.goo.gl, g.co) | Only when you share a place from Google Maps to MotoPlay, to open the short link | The link you shared. |
Also: when you choose to open a destination in Apple Maps, Google Maps or Yandex, the destination is handed to that app. When a crash is detected, a message with a location link is opened in Messages and is sent only if you send it.
Permissions and why
Each permission is asked when first needed and can be turned off any time in iOS Settings.
- Bluetooth: to connect to the motorcycle.
- Location (While Using / Always): route, ride log, parking spot, weather, speed limit and fuel stations. "Always" keeps the bike link and the route running while Maps is in front or the screen is locked; background location is used only while a link is wanted, while a route runs, and for a few minutes after the link drops.
- Motion: lean angle, g-force and crash detection. Processed on the phone.
- Notifications: ride summary, parking reminder, service due, and a warning when the bike can't connect.
- Apple Music / media: to show the playing song on the dash and control it from the handlebar.
- Camera: to scan the dash's Unit ID QR code and to photograph your parking spot. Images stay on the phone.
- Contacts: no permission; the iOS contact picker hands over only the contact you choose.
- Photos: no permission; the iOS photo picker hands over only the photo you choose.
Crashes and diagnostics
MotoPlay writes the exit reasons it gets from Apple's MetricKit into its own on-device link log and sends them nowhere. Whether Apple receives diagnostics depends on your iOS "Analytics & Improvements" setting.
Children
MotoPlay is made for motorcycle riders and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children (we do not collect it from anyone).
This website
motoplay.app uses Google Analytics, through Google Tag Manager, to see how many people visit the site and which pages they read. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and sends your visit (pages, clicks, approximate location, device type) to Google; this covers site visits only and is never combined with app data. You can turn it off in your browser settings or with a tracker blocker. The app itself does not use Google Analytics. Fonts are served from this site. The site is delivered through Cloudflare; Cloudflare and our server may briefly keep your IP address and browser details in technical logs, as with any web request.
